Best Values

7.06 – Baker Mayfield

CLE (QB22)

Even after Baker Mayfield resurrected his career with the Buccaneers, he was drafted as the QB22 in this startup. The cheapest way to acquire a good starting quarterback in a Superflex format is through your startup draft, so I would recommend prioritizing the position. The players being drafted above Mayfield are fantastic in their own right, but I would much rather have a very good QB2 with upside over Josh JacobsGeorge Kittle, or Travis Kelce.

Unlike Geno Smith, I believe Mayfield will only increase in value from here. Mayfield is still quite young at 28 years old, he has the pedigree (number one overall draft pick), and he was drafted to a horrible organization in the Browns. Mayfield is up for a new contract this off-season, and there are talks of him getting 40 million dollars a year. The 7.06 is great value for a quarterback who should increase a ton in value with a new contract.

9.05 – Marquise Brown

ARI (WR44)

The easiest buy this off-season is Marquise Brown. You’re getting Brown as the WR44, and he’s going behind rookies like Adonai MitchellXavier Worthy, and Keon Coleman. There’s no reason Brown should be this low. I would much rather have a 26-year-old receiver who’s drawn over 100 targets every year since 2020 instead of a few rookies with upside.

I understand Brown had a down 2023 season, but he still drew 101 targets. The issue is that Brown only caught 51 of those passes. Considering that Brown only had four drops, I’m willing to bet the issue is because Kyler Murray missed most of the 2023 season, which led to some lackluster quarterback play. Many owners are panicking because the Cardinals are in a position to draft Marvin Harrison Jr, but that won’t hurt Brown like you may think. Harrison Jr will give Brown more touchdown upside, and as an undersized receiver, he’s better off as a number two option.

Biggest Reaches

4.09 – Bryce Young

CAR (QB19)

Please don’t call me a hypocrite for calling Bryce Young a reach, even though I’ve said I like his price before. The price I’m talking about is on KTC, where Young is being valued with an ADP of 62. In this startup, however, Young goes 44th overall. I’m all about getting a quarterback in a startup draft, but not if it causes you to lose out on a ton of value.

More likely than not, Young will be bust, considering the only quarterback who has posted a similar rookie season and found success is Joe Flaco. The issue I have is that Young isn’t a generational-type prospect, and the Panthers have put him in such a bad position. The Panthers traded their future away for Young, even though I don’t believe he can succeed with average to below-average weapons. It will be tough to put pieces around Young, and I don’t trust the Panthers organization to make the right moves.

9.06 – Jake Ferguson, DAL

(TE12)

There is no point in drafting Jake Ferguson at the 9.06. If you’re in a startup, please just take Dallas Goedert at 12.06 instead. The difference in production and long term value is simply not worth three rounds. Ferguson had a good 2023 season but I’m not confident in his long term ability. Ferguson was a 4th round draft pick, and it’s very possible that the Cowboys system is what has allowed him to find success, not his talent.

The Cowboys have also told us they don’t believe Ferguson is a fantastic talent because they just drafted Luke Schoonmaker 58th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft. Schoonmaker is a better prospect than Ferguson with much higher draft capital. It typically takes tight ends at least a year to develop so don’t be surprised if Schoonmaker becomes the Cowboys TE1 after developing in his rookie season.
